How to Foster a Growth Mindset in Organizations with Sarah Bostock

  1. With your experience in leading progressive learning and leadership development strategies, what are the most critical skills leaders need to cultivate for success in today’s workplace?

Leaders today must cultivate adaptability, emotional intelligence, and strategic thinking to navigate rapid change. Resilience and agility enable them to lead through uncertainty, while strong communication and influence foster collaboration in hybrid environments. Data literacy is increasingly essential for informed decision-making, and a growth mindset ensures continuous learning. Above all, leaders must embrace inclusive leadership, creating cultures of trust, innovation, and high performance.

  1. You emphasize creating organizational cultures that enable people to be their best.  What are the first steps HR leaders can take to foster such a culture?

HR leaders can start by clearly defining and embedding a growth mindset culture where continuous learning, adaptability, and collaboration are valued. This begins with leadership role modelling, ensuring senior leaders demonstrate and reinforce these behaviours. Next, psychological safety must be prioritised, encouraging open dialogue, feedback, and innovation without fear of failure. Employee development pathways should be structured to support career growth, leveraging mentorship, coaching and skill-building programmes. Finally, aligning HR policies, recognition, and rewards with these cultural values ensures that the environment genuinely enables people to thrive.

  1. What innovative approaches have you seen or implemented to create more inclusive workplaces?

When it comes to creating more inclusive workplaces, I have seen some great shifts due to establishing brave spaces for dialogue. A few years ago, we partnered with an external third party who helped us to create environments where colleagues felt safe to engage in open and honest conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion. These spaces encourage sharing experiences and perspectives without fear of judgment.

It’s also important to foster inclusive leadership and embed inclusivity into core behaviours. We focus on training leaders to model inclusive behaviours, such as active listening and equitable recognition.  Inclusive leadership sets the tone for the organisation and encourages a culture where all colleagues feel valued.

We’ve also implemented inclusive hiring practices by revising our recruitment processes to eliminate biases, ensuring job descriptions, interview procedures, and evaluations are equitable. This strategy promotes a diverse talent pool and fosters a culture of inclusion.

I’m also a big advocate for personalising employee experiences, such as flexible work arrangements and neurodiversity -friendly workspaces, which helps us to embed inclusivity in daily operations.

  1. As a specialist in Employee Engagement, how can organizations maintain high engagement levels during times of significant change or uncertainty?

Maintaining high engagement during change starts with transparent and frequent communication – employees need clarity on the “why” behind changes and how they impact them. Involving employees in the process through feedback loops, listening sessions, and co-creation opportunities fosters ownership and trust. Empathetic leadership is crucial – leaders should be visible, approachable, and proactive in addressing concerns. It’s important to reinforce a sense of purpose, helping employees see how their work contributes to broader goals. Finally, prioritising well-being and recognition, especially during uncertainty, ensures employees feel valued and supported, sustaining engagement even through challenging transitions.

  1. As someone skilled in Business and Personal Coaching, how do you approach helping leaders align their personal growth with organizational goals?

I start by helping leaders gain clarity on their personal values, strengths, and aspirations, using tools like self-assessments and reflective coaching. Once they have a strong sense of purpose, we map their growth to organisational goals, identifying where their leadership impact can drive business success. I encourage a growth mindset, ensuring they see challenges as opportunities to develop. Through goal setting, feedback loops, and real-work application, I support them in building the skills and mindset needed to lead with authenticity while advancing strategic objectives. This alignment not only enhances their leadership effectiveness but also fosters a culture of high performance and engagement.

  1. What challenges have you encountered in implementing leadership development strategies, and how have you successfully overcome them?

One common challenge is resistance to change, especially from leaders who feel they don’t have time for development. To overcome this, I focus on integrating leadership development into daily work through coaching, peer learning, and on-the-job experiences rather than standalone training.

Another challenge which may be encountered is a lack of senior buy-in, which I address by demonstrating the business impact of strong leadership – using data to show how effective leaders drive engagement, retention, and performance.

Finally, sustaining behavioural change can be difficult. I tackle this by embedding continuous feedback, mentoring, and real-time application into leadership programmes, ensuring development is an ongoing journey, not a one-time event.

  1. As an expert in culture and employee engagement, how do you see hybrid work impacting workplace culture, and what can companies do to address this?

Hybrid work has reshaped workplace culture by emphasizing flexibility, autonomy, and digital connection, but it also presents challenges in maintaining cohesion, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose. Without intentional efforts, silos can form, and engagement may decline.

To address this, organisations should focus on building cultures beyond physical presence – creating inclusive communication rhythms, ensuring equal access to opportunities, and fostering a sense of belonging regardless of location. Leaders must be visible and intentional in connecting teams, using a mix of in-person touchpoints and virtual engagement. Finally, you may also want to consider redesigning employee experiences, aligning recognition, development, and team routines to fit the hybrid model, and ensuring that culture thrives in both digital and physical spaces.

  1. Looking ahead, what trends in learning, leadership, and organizational development do you believe will shape the future of HR?

The future of HR will be shaped by skills-based learning, AI-driven personalisation, and human centred leadership. Organisations will shift to skills-first career paths, leveraging internal talent marketplaces and adaptive learning powered by AI. Leadership will prioritise emotional intelligence, psychological safety, and purpose-driven management. In a hybrid world, companies must be intentional about culture-building to drive inclusion and engagement. Lastly, data-led decision-making will enable predictive workforce planning, ensuring HR remains agile and future-ready.
