Building a Powerful Leadership Brand with Shivangi Walke

  1. With your extensive experience coaching leaders globally, what are the most common challenges senior leaders face in public speaking?

One of the biggest challenges I see is the disconnect between expertise and engagement. Senior leaders often have deep knowledge but struggle to make it compelling for their audience. They get caught up in presenting their perspective instead of crafting a narrative that inspires and moves people.

Another key challenge is what I call the Audio-Video mismatch. Even seasoned executives feel the pressure of high-stakes communication. They worry about being judged, losing their train of thought, or not making the intended impact. So, even though they say the right words, their body language doesn’t match the message.

Finally, many leaders struggle with adaptability. What works in a boardroom may not resonate with a town hall or an external keynote.

Mastering public speaking isn’t just about competence and confidence; it’s about knowing how to match your message, tone, and delivery based on your audience.

The good news? It is possible to balance authenticity and influence. These challenges are all solvable through training, deliberate practice, feedback in a psychologically safe space, and expert guidance.

  1. You help leaders build a powerful leadership brand. What does that involve, and why is it crucial today?

A leadership brand isn’t just about what you do; it’s about how people experience you. It’s the distinct value you bring and how you consistently show up.

Building a strong leadership brand starts with clarity—who you are, what you stand for, and what makes you different. From there, it’s about communication—ensuring your message is clear, compelling, and aligned with your values.

Today, this is more important than ever. We live in a world where leaders are scrutinized in real-time. A well-crafted leadership brand doesn’t just help you stand out; it builds trust, attracts opportunities, and positions you as a thought leader in your industry.

At its core, your leadership brand is your leadership legacy in motion. And the strongest leadership brands are built with intention, consistency, and a deep understanding of connecting with people.

  1. Many leaders are technically strong but struggle with communication. How can they bridge this gap?

Technical expertise is invaluable but can become a barrier when not communicated effectively. The key is simplifying complexity. I always tell leaders: “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

I recommend a simple framework: What, Why, How/When, So What, What now? Explain the issue and why it matters, and outline the solution in clear, structured steps.

Another challenge is making technical content engaging. This is where storytelling comes in, turning data into a compelling narrative helps audiences stay engaged. That’s exactly what I focus on in my signature program, Make The Stage: Where I support managers to become better speakers and, hence, better leaders.

  1. How can leaders overcome their fear of public speaking and build confidence on stage?

Fear of public speaking often emerges from self-doubt. Confidence comes from preparation, mindset, and practice.

First, leaders need to shift from performance mode to service mode—focus on the value they’re providing rather than worrying about being judged.

Second, practice in a psychologically safe, structured environment where you can receive real and real-time feedback.

Lastly, small wins matter, start with low-stakes speaking opportunities and build up to larger ones. Confidence is a muscle; the more you use it, the stronger it gets.

  1. Virtual communication is now a significant part of leadership. How can leaders ensure they are as impactful online as in person?

Virtual meetings demand more energy and intentionality. A lot of the energy we naturally bring on a physical stage is lost in a virtual setting.

The attention span and the quality of attention are much lower online. The golden rule? Be more conversational than presentational

Speakers need to move to become orchestrators of conversations. Use the virtual tools available to increase interactivity. Involve the audience and get them to participate every few minutes.

Also, the virtual setup should support, not distract from, your message.

  1. What role does storytelling play in effective leadership communication, and how can leaders develop this skill?

Storytelling is leadership’s secret weapon. Facts tell, but stories sell.

Whether inspiring teams, persuading stakeholders, or making data memorable, stories make communication stick.

The best way to develop this skill is to start small, using personal anecdotes, case studies, or analogies, which can turn a dry presentation into a compelling experience. Leaders should also practice structuring stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end, ensuring there’s always a relatable hook.

Studying the art of storytelling helps craft narratives that resonate, inspire, and drive action.

  1. What advice would you give to women leaders looking to enhance their executive presence and visibility?

First, own your space—literally and figuratively. Many women leaders downplay their presence by using softer language, hesitating before speaking, or physically shrinking into their space. Confidence isn’t about being loud; it’s about being intentional with your words and delivery.

Second, visibility isn’t about self-promotion—it’s about strategic influence. Women leaders should actively share insights, contribute to high-stakes discussions, and cultivate a strong professional network.

  1. What’s one communication habit every leader should cultivate to be more effective?

Listening. It sounds simple, but most leaders listen to respond, not to understand

The best communicators create space for dialogue, ask thoughtful questions, and truly absorb what’s being said before offering insights. Another powerful habit? The pause. Silence is a tool that strategically adds weight to your message and commands attention.
